02/2010 | First Super Star crews trained
Notwithstanding their professionalism and experience in the daily flying operations of Deutsche Lufthansa, it was a special moment for the four prospective pilots and three flight engineers of the DLBS to start their flight training on the SCFA’s Lockheed L-1049 Super Constellation in the autumn of 2009. The practical training had been preceded by 18 months' intensive theoretical preparations combined with simulator training.
In September 2009 the wait was finally over and the DLBS crew found themselves poised for take-off in the L-1049 with tail code HB-RSC in Epinal, France. It was almost a historic moment when on 29 September 2009 a purely Lufthansa crew comprising Captain Uwe Hannes, training captain Georg Kohne and flight engineer Jan Frieben once more sat in the cockpit of a Lockheed Super Constellation after over 43 years. However, they were still under the supervision of the SCFA instructors, as the DLBS crew had not yet completed their extensive flight training.
Some ten days later, after 44 flying hours and 114 landings, the training reached a successful conclusion in the form of four captains and three flight engineers licensed for the Constellation family. Moreover, since then three of the captains and two of the flight engineers in this team have obtained licenses as instructors and examiners for the L-1049 from the German Civil Aviation Authority (LBA).
The fact that HB-RSC is about to undergo extensive repairs later this year has proved that the decision to train on the only European L-1049 as soon as possible was a wise one. Signs of corrosion on the rear spar of the wings have led to the decision to perform extensive repair work on the aircraft over the coming months before it can return to the air in 2011.
